Struggle with multi-step math problems? Learn the "Anchor Technique" used at The Alternative Learning Hub to bypass memory overload and improve your IGCSE Maths scores.
The Hidden Barrier to IGCSE Success
Many students believe that being "bad at maths" is a lack of logic. In reality, for the IGCSE curriculum, the barrier is often Working Memory.
The RAM Analogy: Working Memory is like your brain's "RAM"—a temporary workspace where you hold information while processing it.
IGCSE problems often require you to hold 5 to 7 pieces of information at once. When that "workspace" gets full, the brain "clears the cache," leading to that common feeling of staring at a page and forgetting the next step.
The "Anchor Technique": Building an External Brain
To beat the memory trap, you must move the burden from your mind onto the paper. At The Alternative Learning Hub, we teach students to "Anchor" their thoughts through two primary systems:
1. The Color-Coded Remainder (The "Bus Stop" Hack)
One of the easiest ways to lose marks is forgetting a remainder in short division or a "carried" number in algebra.
The Fix: Use a specific neon highlighter for these "floating" numbers.
The Result: The bright color "holds" the value for you. Your brain can stop worrying about remembering the number and use 100% of its power on the calculation.
2. The Command Word Filter
Exam stress makes it easy to drift away from what the question actually asked.
The Fix: Before you solve, highlight the Action Word (e.g., Calculate, Solve, Simplify).
The Result: This acts as a visual "North Star." Even if you get lost in the numbers, a quick glance at the highlight reminds your brain of the goal without needing to re-read the entire question.
Why Systems Beat Rote Learning
Math should be a logic puzzle, not a memory test. At the Hub, we provide a collaborative environment with small group sizes (up to 50 participants) to ensure students truly understand the "why" behind the math.
Our Interactive Sessions Include:
Core & Extended Topics: We offer comprehensive coverage of Number, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Statistics.
Exam Technique: We practice past papers and teach students exactly what examiners are looking for.
Problem Solving: We focus on developing the critical thinking skills required for "Grade 9" questions.
Student Support: Google Classroom provides access to pre-recorded sessions, support materials, and homework.
Tutor Connectivity: One-to-one support is available throughout the course via online meetings.
Master IGCSE Maths with Confidence
Stop fighting your brain's wiring and start working with it. Whether you are home-educated, anxious about exams, or looking to turn weaknesses into strengths, our interactive sessions provide the tools and support you need to succeed.
The course starts on 3 March with online sessions available for £800.
