How we support our students
Many of the families who come to us have already tried everything they can think of. School may have become overwhelming, anxiety may have taken hold, or traditional classrooms may simply no longer be the right environment for their child.
At The Alternative Learning Hub we understand that every student learns differently. Many of the young people we support are neurodivergent or experiencing school anxiety, burnout or school refusal.
Our learning environment is calm, structured and flexible. We focus on rebuilding confidence first, helping students reconnect with learning in a way that feels manageable and supportive.
Neurodiversity is not treated as a problem to fix. We see it as a different way of thinking and learning, often bringing creativity, insight and unique strengths.
Practical Support for Students
Advance access to lesson plans via a bespoke dashboard - everything in one place
Students receive lesson plans before each session so they can review the material in advance and reduce anxiety around unfamiliar topics.
Note-taking support
We teach and model effective note-taking using clear templates and tools that help students organise and review information.
Dyslexia-friendly resources
All learning materials are available in accessible fonts such as OpenDyslexic, supporting students with dyslexia and other reading differences.
Pomodoro study sessions
Lessons and study time are structured using the Pomodoro technique, helping students focus for manageable periods with regular breaks.
Individual learning plans
Each student receives a personalised learning plan tailored to their strengths, interests and preferred learning style.
Neurodivergent teaching methods
Our lessons use flexible, multisensory approaches designed for neurodivergent learners, including visual aids and interactive resources.
Body-doubling homework sessions
Students can complete homework alongside a supportive adult or peer, helping with focus, motivation and accountability.
Study and life skills coaching
We support students with revision strategies, time management, organisation and self-advocacy skills.
Advocacy and practical guidance.
Where needed, we liaise with local authorities and help families navigate support systems such as EHCPs and other educational provisions.
Support for parents
Parents are part of the process. We offer regular progress updates, advice and guidance to help families support their child’s learning journey.
Our Aim
We focus on each student’s strengths and interests, tailoring our approach to help them grow both academically and personally.
For anxious students, we provide a calm and understanding environment alongside practical strategies to manage stress and rebuild confidence. For students who have struggled to access education, we work to remove barriers and create realistic pathways forward.
Many of our students gradually move towards academic qualifications such as IGCSEs once confidence in learning begins to return.
At the heart of our work is a simple belief:
Education should be accessible to every child.
Our goal is to help students rediscover learning and move forward with confidence, whatever their starting point.
CHETANA GREENWOOD

My name is Chetana Greenwood, and I’m the founder of The Alternative Learning Hub. For more than 25 years, I’ve poured my energy and heart into education - especially supporting students who are neurodivergent, anxious, or simply need something different from the mainstream.
As a neurodivergent thinker myself and a home-educating parent, I know first-hand how tough it can be to find learning spaces where everyone truly belongs. That’s why I started ALH: to make sure nobody gets left behind, no matter how they learn or what challenges they face.
I believe education should be flexible, creative, and -above all - kind. My teaching isn’t just about passing exams (though I love celebrating those wins!); it’s about helping each student discover what they’re capable of, at their own pace, in a space where they feel safe to be themselves.
I use patience, humour, and a lot of empathy to break down barriers and build confidence, especially for those who’ve struggled to fit in elsewhere.
Every day, I’m inspired by the resilience and brilliance of my students. Whether it’s finding the right strategy for a dyslexic learner, creating a calm space for an anxious teen, or simply listening when someone needs to talk—I’m here for it all.
My mission is to empower young people to surprise themselves, to find joy in learning, and to know they are valued for exactly who they are.
If you’re looking for a learning hub that truly understands neurodiversity and puts people before process, you’re in the right place. I can’t wait to welcome you to our community.
