Many of you will have heard about the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill currently being discussed in Parliament. I know this is a contentious issue for home educators and families using online provision, and I want to be open about what this might mean for us all.
What’s Changing?
- The Bill proposes that all children educated outside mainstream schools - including those learning at home or online - will need to be registered with the local authority.
As your provider, if the local authority (LEA) requests information about students and families, I am legally required to comply. This is not new for safeguarding - if a child is considered at risk, I have always had a duty to act, and that will not change.
The main difference is that, under the new Bill, I may be asked to share basic information about who is accessing our provision, even if there are no safeguarding concerns.
My Commitment to You
I will always handle your information with the utmost care and in line with
. I will only share what is legally required, and will always aim to keep you informed.
The Alternative Learning Hub has always prioritised safeguarding and student wellbeing-these responsibilities remain unchanged if there are concerns about a child’s safety.
I am, and always will be, a strong advocate for the rights of home educating and neurodivergent families. I will continue to champion your right to choose the educational path that is best for your child, and to ensure that any changes are implemented in a way that is respectful, proportionate, and supportive.
For most families, your day-to-day experience will not change. If anything does come up, you’ll be the first to know, and I’ll support you through any new processes.
I am monitoring developments closely and will keep you updated as things progress. If you have any questions or worries, please don’t hesitate to contact me directly. My priority is, and always will be, the safety, wellbeing, privacy, and rights of your young people and your family.
